Summer season

    Summer Events in Scotland

Scotland's summer runs long, light and loud. From Highland games in June to the Edinburgh Fringe in August, here's everything on this summer.

Scottish summer is the busiest part of the events calendar. Between the summer solstice in late June and the autumn equinox in late September, the country runs Highland games in almost every town, outdoor music festivals from Kelburn to Belladrum, the twelve Edinburgh August festivals, and a rolling schedule of coastal, castle and country-park events that make the most of the long northern days.

This page collects every summer-season event currently listed with Nearby Events. If you're building a Scottish summer trip, the events feed below plus our festivals guide give you the full picture.

    Summer festivals and Highland games

Highland games run every weekend from mid-June to early September, with the flagship Braemar Gathering in early September traditionally attended by the royal family. Cowal, Aboyne, Ballater and the Argyllshire Gathering (Oban) are the other headline events. Outdoor music festivals cluster in July — Kelburn Garden Party, Doune the Rabbit Hole, Tiree Music Festival, and Belladrum near Inverness.

    Edinburgh in August

The twelve Edinburgh festivals in August — Fringe, International, Book, Art, Film (moved to summer in recent years), Jazz, Tattoo — turn the city into the world's biggest arts venue for four weeks. Book accommodation and headline shows 3–6 months out; Fringe walk-up tickets are still widely available if you're flexible.

What are the best Scottish summer events?

Edinburgh's August festivals, the outdoor music festivals in July (Kelburn, Tiree, Belladrum), and the Highland games circuit through August and early September are the flagship draws.

Do I need to book Edinburgh accommodation in advance for August?

Yes — Edinburgh sells out in August every year, and prices roughly double. Book accommodation as soon as your dates are fixed, ideally by February for the following August.
