    About events in St Andrews

St Andrews is best known for two things: golf and the University of St Andrews, Scotland's oldest. Together they give the town an unusual mix — an ancient ruined cathedral, three miles of championship golf links, a busy student calendar, and a coastline of white-sand beaches that continues into the villages of the East Neuk. For its size it has one of the most active cultural calendars in Scotland.

The Byre Theatre is the town's flagship performance venue, and the University's music and film societies keep an almost weekly programme of concerts, screenings and lectures open to the public. Summer brings the Open Championship (in its rota years), the St Andrews Voices festival and outdoor cinema on the West Sands. Winter is quieter but centres on the University's traditions — the Kate Kennedy Procession, Raisin Weekend and the Christmas ball season.

    St Andrews events FAQ

How do I get to St Andrews?

Leuchars is the nearest railway station (about 10 minutes by taxi or bus). St Andrews is roughly an hour from Edinburgh and 20 minutes from Dundee by road.

Is St Andrews busy outside term time?

The town gets busier during golf tournaments and the summer tourist season, and quieter in January. It's rarely dull, though — locals and visitors keep the pubs, cafes and Byre programme active all year.

Can non-members play the Old Course?

Yes — the Old Course runs a daily ballot for tee times. Book well in advance and be flexible with dates.
