Best free things to do year-round
Scotland's five national museums — the National Museum of Scotland, the Kelvingrove, the Riverside Museum, the V&A Dundee's permanent galleries and the National Galleries — are all free entry every day. Add free public art trails in every city, free castle grounds (Stirling, Doune, Craigmillar), and the country's remarkable network of walking and cycling routes, and no-cost days out are the norm rather than the exception.
For music, look for lunchtime concerts in cathedrals (Edinburgh's St Giles, Glasgow's Cathedral), free college and conservatoire showcases, and open-air stages during summer festivals.
